SHOT STOPPING

On your toes to adjust to the line of the ball

Move down the line of the ball to narrow the angle.

Set Position (as described previously)

Decision. Catch or Parry?

If we parry we must either react to the loose ball or push well out the way.

If we draw a line from both posts to the football, it forms a triangle. It is within this triangle that we work. If positioned correctly the ball can really only ever travel straight at you. By moving down the line of the ball we narrow the angle of the triangle, making it even harder for the striker to score. This is the basics of Shot Stopping. Our set Position is then equally important. If the attackers within shooting distance then we must be prepared and crouch a little lower to generate more power for our dive. If he’s further away then we can stand a little taller to deal with the other options (Cross, Through Ball etc.). It’s all about the right decision at the right time.
